Striped Icebergs

Icebergs sometimes have stripes, formed by layers of ice deposited on different conditions. Blue stripes are created when a crevice in the ice sheet fills up with melted water and freezes so quickly that no bubbles form. Green stripes form when an iceberg falls into the sea and a layer of water rich in algae freezes onto the bottom.  Brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the sea.

Who’s this bad peach apple? It’s Wapeach, the awful sister of Wario and Waluigi! She’s so awful, in fact, that Nintendo were banned from showing her to you. But now the truth is out!

Birthday card for my bro! He really likes Drilbur and chocolate cake. The actual chocolate cake that we ate was delicious.

Recently I haven’t been doing much drawing except for Ask Salamanders, but I’m snapping back to life a bit with a couple of ponies! GO PONIES
These two were the only MLP toys I had as a kid so when I got into Friendship is Magic along with everyone else on the internet, I looked ‘em up on MyLittleWiki and was surprised to discover they had very similar names. Synchronicity! My Tootie had been given a haircut by her previous owner, so I went with a badass 80s look for her. I always imagined her as being the more butch one, with her sister as her vainer, lazier femme counterpart.

Just remember that you’re standing on a planet that’s evolvingAnd revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,That’s orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it’s reckoned,A sun that is the source of all our power. The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can seeAre moving at a million miles a dayIn an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,Of the galaxy we call the ‘Milky Way’.Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars. It’s a hundred thousand light years side to side.It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,But out by us, it’s just three thousand light years wide. We’re thirty thousand light years from galactic central point. We go ‘round every two hundred million years,And our galaxy is only one of millions of billionsIn this amazing and expanding universe. The universe itself keeps on expanding and expandingIn all of the directions it can whizzAs fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,Twelve million miles a minute, and that’s the fastest speed there is.So remember, when you’re feeling very small and insecure,How amazingly unlikely is your birth,And pray that there’s intelligent life somewhere up in space,‘Cause there’s bugger all down here on Earth.
The Galaxy Song - Monty Python
(seriously, I love space)

Just look how big those stars are! THEY’RE TOO BIG!They’re so big, you can’t even imagine them, they don’t even fit in your head! W.O.W.
This legit makes me get all emotional. I’m just so insignificant and tiny in one direction and so insignificant and huge in another and despite all that I’m actually an important component of a whole and after a bit I just sit there staring happily into space because the universe is just. GRAND.

Dallol - The World’s Weirdest Volcanic Crater:

In the North East of Ethiopia lies the Danokil Desert.  At its heart is a volcanic crater, Dallol, little known and seldom visited but quite extraordinary.

Surrounding the volcano are acidic hot springs, mountains of sulphur, pillars of salt, small gas geysers and pools of acid isolated by salt ridges. It makes for one of the most bizarre landscapes on planet Earth.

((Whoa!  I might have to refer to this when coming up with a landscape to paint sometime…))

I wanna go .O.

this is WAY too cool not to reblog. the article is really interesting too!

“Toxic gas regularly escapes from the numerous fumaroles and geysers, often without warning. Around the area the remains of small animals overcome by the fumes can be found. The gases do, however, also escape through permanent spurts – you can see them on the surface of the poison water pools, accompanied by a strange gurgling noise.”

This is REALLY COOL, but is it bad that the first thing I thought was “WOW, did someone render Borean Tundra in a 3D prog- oh wait no those are photos.”

.. yes.  I’m an unforgivable nerd. :|

Shhh, it’s okay. I did the exact same thing.

I’d love to go somewhere like this one day, except with my luck I’d probably fall in and burn myself.

Geeky Math Equation Creates Beautiful 3-D World

This article was published by Wired on December 9, 2009. This is not a new news but I still find it amazing. The first time I saw this, I was like, “WHOOAAH! These are beautiful!”

This article was about the Mandelbulb. A group of math geeks created a three-dimensional analogue for the mesmerizing Mandelbrot fractal. The 3-D renderings were generated by applying an iterative algorithm to a sphere. The same calculation is applied over and over to the sphere’s points in three dimensions. In spirit, that’s similar to how the original 2-D Mandelbrot set generates its infinite and self-repeating complexity.

Look Emily!

Always reblog Mandelbulb!
